A Guide to Buying a Printer

Printers have come a long way since they were first brought to the market in 1987. Nowadays a simple printer won’t cut it, you need to consider whether you want a full colour printer, one with scanner options, a laser printer or just a single function printer? We bet that you haven’t really thought about the different options available to you. Well don’t worry, we’re here to make life a little easier and help you decide what printer is the best for your needs.

When looking for a home printer there are generally four options to choose from:

Laser Printer

The laser printer is probably the most popular type of printer for home and office purposes because they produce high quality results, and are therefore a good option if you plan to regularly print quality plain text. Typically, laser printers offer a high amount of pages printed per cartridge, but it is worth considering the price of the cartridges, as they can be more expensive than inkjets.

Photo Printer

These types of printers are specifically designed for printing photos. Many come with the option to edit photos and have memory card slots and/or a connection so you can upload your photos directly from your camera, mobile or . If you are an avid photographer or have to deal with graphics frequently for work, then this printer might be worth considering.

All-in-One Printer

The name says it all really, as well as the printing option, users can also scan and photocopy documents, some even include a fax machine which makes this a handy printer for business purposes. These types of printers generally come in the form of an inkjet, but you can get laser versions too. These also tend to have single cartridges for each colour, so you only need to replace the colour you are low on.

Single Function Inkjet Printer

Single inkjet printers are the perfect choice if you’re only planning on doing the occasional bit of printing. The inkjet printing process involves thousands of ink dots being imprinted onto the paper. The inkjets for these types of printers tend to be cheaper than others such as laser, however, the ink can smudge during the printing process, so they’re better for occasional printing purposes.

When purchasing a new printer it is worth considering the cost of the replacement ink cartridges before making a purchase, as the ink can end up costing you more than the printer itself. To view of our range of printers click here.
