Remote Working

When Boris Johnson announced lockdown measures for the UK back in March 2020, many people that were lucky enough to work from home did so. This meant a lot more virtual meetings were happening as people were not allowed to go into their offices and go about their usual business.

Zoom seemed to be the go-to video conferencing tool, it is simple to use and reliable and according to research Zoom saw an increase of 225% in March and data usage rose by 877%!

However, with the success of this, and many businesses using it at home, it became a prime target for hackers, meaning uninvited users could enter meetings and users emails and photos could be leaked.

The CEO of zoom, Eric Yuan responded to these security threats by focusing more on security and privacy. In April, anyone entering a meeting on Zoom must use a password to gain access. Another update was having a “virtual waiting room” this allowed organizers of the meeting had the chance to admit or deny access to their guests.

Other available Platforms

There are many other platforms available such as WebEx, GoToMeeting or Skype, as well as Teams all, have had increased numbers over the pandemic period. But because Zoom only makes video calling products it focuses on making sure they are user friendly and people like them, when people enjoy using things they will recommend it to others, this is what happened for Zoom.

Of course, during the lockdown, Zoom was not just used for business meetings, it was used all over the world to keep family members and friends connected while they could not see each other. There were many free apps available but zoom seemed to be the one most people were choosing.
